Post-operative risk factors, Post-operative nausea and vomiting, Amdipharm Plc:"A number of post-operative factors can influence the risk of PONV. Pain - relief of pain is often associated with the relief of nausea, though the use of opioid analgesics may exacerbate the risk because of their known emetic potential. However some patients may be willing to tolerate a degree of pain provided they are free of nausea and vomiting. Dizziness - PONV is increased in patients who experience dizziness. Early ambulation - Early or sudden movement can increase the risk of PONV, especially if the patients have received opioids Use of opioids - the use of opioids may exacerbate the risk of PONV because of their known emetic potential Hypotension - post-operative hypotension is common and can trigger PONV Premature oral intake - It is generally considered wise to restrict oral intake, and then to recommend small sips of water to minimise the risk of PONV."

A Priority For Patients, Post-operative Nausea and Vomiting (PONV): An Overview, anesthesiologyinfo.com:"However, there is a reason above and beyond the financial to approach this problem aggressively. Patient satisfaction with their ambulatory experience is closely tied with their ability to avoid nausea and vomiting after their surgery. In multiple surveys, patients list the avoidance of nausea and vomiting as their number one concern when faced with surgery and anesthesia. In fact, this issue ranks ahead of such things as pain, death, myocardial infarction and stroke for patients. While this may reflect some degree of denial, it also demonstrates clearly just how important this issue has become for ambulatory facilities today. So, even though aggressive prevention and management of PONV might incur some additional costs, it is worth doing to insure patient satisfaction remains high."

Post-Operative Nausea and Vomiting (PONV), CancerNausea.com:"Impact of Nausea and Vomiting on Quality of Life. PONV can negatively affect your quality of life, making it hard to function normally from day to day, causing anxiety and depression. Uncontrolled nausea and vomiting may even delay your recovery. Until recently, PONV received little attention compared with the issue of post-operative pain. However, many patients consider PONV to be as debilitating as the pain associated with a surgical procedure, with an estimated 25-40% of all surgical patients being at risk."

Anesthesia: Antiemetic Prophylaxis for Post-Operative Nausea and Vomiting, Centers for Laparoscopic Obesity Surgery:"Post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are commonly reported adverse events after surgery and can contribute to the development of aspiration, wound dehiscence, and increased bleeding.1,2 Prophylaxis with antiemetics has been shown to reduce the incidence of PONV as well as improve patient satisfaction, decrease recovery and discharge times, and reduce hospital readmissions.3-10 There are many studies supporting the use of prophylactic antiemetics to reduce the incidence of PONV in patients at high risk for PONV.3,7-9,11-18 Several different antiemetics have been studied for the prevention of PONV including Metaclopromide, perphenazine, droperidol, ondansetron and dolasetron.3-5,7,11,19-21 These agents have all been associated with varying degrees of success."

Preop Fluid Bolus Reduces Risk Of Post Op Nausea And Vomiting, The Internet Journal of Advanced Nursing Practice:"Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are distressing and common occurrences after operative procedures requiring general anesthesia. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a preoperative one liter fluid bolus of normal saline on a patient's post operative nausea and vomiting. This pilot study compared the incidence of nausea and vomiting between an experimental group who received a 1-liter fluid bolus pre-operatively, and a control group who were given the standard fluid requirements."
