Credentialing of Critical Care Nurses, Bonnie S. Niebuhr, MS, RN:"Nearly 50,000 critical care nurses are currently certified in neonatal, pediatric and adult critical care nursing by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) Certification Corporation. Nearly 80% of the certificants (those holding the CCRN credential) are staff nurses, 9% hold management positions, 4% hold educator positions, approximately 4% are clinical nurse specialists, and less than one tenth of 1% are nurse practitioners. In addition, 17% of the certificants possess a diploma in nursing, 24% have an associate degree in nursing, 46% have a bachelor's degree in nursing, 10% have a master's degree, and less than 1% have a doctorate degree (Unpublished data, AACN Certification Corporation, May, 1993)."
