A Lesson in Kindness, Kelly Maher Morrissey, RN, MSN, Nursing Spectrum:"The ED appeared relatively calm on Sunday morning as I arrived to work my 8-hour shift. I received report on two patients; both sounded clinically stable. One patient, Dominic,* was particularly memorable. Dominic was an 87-year-old man who had been transported from a nursing home to the emergency department (ED) at about 4 AM for symptoms including a 104F fever and chest congestion. He was evaluated, diagnosed with pneumonia, and admitted. During report, the departing night nurse indicated that Dominic was oriented to person only and had been agitated since arrival." A Moment in Nursing, A Changed Life, Sharon Obelsky, RN, Nursing Spectrum:"Recently I was asked, “What has been your most memorable moment in nursing?” Many humorous moments came to mind. Of course being at all four of my grandchildren’s births was wonderful; however, the following story has really affected my whole life. I do not take for granted some things that I may have, had I not become a nurse and had this experience.
As a long-time maternity nurse, I often hear, “Oh, maternity, that must be such a happy place to work with all those little babies to hold and rock!” For the most part this is true; I have always loved it and would not work in any other field of nursing. Except for other maternity nurses, though, few people know how terribly tragic it can be, to be working when there is a fetal death, or what it’s like to deal with issues of abuse, neglect, or poverty." ******************************************************
Helping Patients Stay Heart Smart, Reg McCurdy, Real Vermont Nurse Stories:"Travel Nurse."Never underestimate the power of what you know and how you choose to share it with others…what you know and learn could save someone’s life." When he was younger, Reg McCurdy never thought he would become a nurse. But a series of jobs led him from being a hospital transporter to working as a travel nurse with a specialty in cardiac care." ******************************************************
It's Like Going to Work in Your Pajamas, Bryan Lorber, RN, Real Vermont Nurse Stories:""Nursing gives you the opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives while giving yourself a feeling of total satisfaction." Bryan Lorber is not your typical nurse. After nearly ten years of success working in commercial banking, as a real estate appraiser, and as an educator, he went back to school to study health education and decided to become a nurse." ******************************************************
Livesaver Extraordinaire: From Firefighter to Charter Nurse, George Henry, Emergency Room Nurse, Real Vermont Nurse Stories:"Nursing has given me the freedom I enjoy and the excitement I want in a career." From transporting critically ill patients by ambulance to traveling the country caring for patients, George Henry has been on the move in his nursing career. He may have been destined for this exciting career path as a nurse. Ever since his high school days when he volunteered as an emergency medical technician and firefighter, George has had jobs that give that adrenaline rush of excitement. After working in the U.S. Navy as a medical corpsman in a naval hospital and on board a ship, he moved to Vermont and received his bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Vermont." ******************************************************
Making Healthcare the Best It Can Be, Maureen’s story, Real Vermont Nurse Stories:"Quality Improvement Specialist/ Nursing Supervisor. "Nurses are great people. They know how to laugh, work as a team, get the job done, be optimistic, and be tender." As the second eldest of seven kids, Maureen is no stranger to taking care of people. This lifelong caretaker has seen it all and doesn’t get grossed out easily. So it is no surprise that nursing came naturally to Maureen." ******************************************************
Preparing Patients for Surgery, Irene Bonin’s story, Real Vermont Nurse Stories:"Every day I work as a nurse I feel I have made a difference for that patient and their family." Irene knew what she wanted to be from the moment she interviewed her next door neighbor, a nurse, for an eighth grade school project. After the interview, Irene saw nursing as an ideal career and opportunity to help others." ******************************************************
Real Vermont Nurse Stories:"Read stories about real Vermont nurses and their careers. The jobs these nurses have represent a small fraction of the choices available to nurses when picking a career. Find out what inspired them to become a nurse, what kinds of responsibilities they have on the job and what they love most about being a nurse!" ******************************************************
Using Your Mind and Heart to Make a Difference, Jan Oliver’s story, Real Vermont Nurse Stories:"Nurse Manager. "Nursing is a profession where you are always learning. It allows you to use your mind and heart." When Jan Oliver was just one month old, she became seriously ill with pertussis. Hearing stories about the nurses who helped her overcome this condition inspired Jan to become a nurse. Now, Jan can give back to others." ******************************************************
