A Lesson in Kindness, Kelly Maher Morrissey, RN, MSN, Nursing Spectrum:"The ED appeared relatively calm on Sunday morning as I arrived to work my 8-hour shift. I received report on two patients; both sounded clinically stable. One patient, Dominic,* was particularly memorable. Dominic was an 87-year-old man who had been transported from a nursing home to the emergency department (ED) at about 4 AM for symptoms including a 104F fever and chest congestion. He was evaluated, diagnosed with pneumonia, and admitted. During report, the departing night nurse indicated that Dominic was oriented to person only and had been agitated since arrival."

A Moment in Nursing, A Changed Life, Sharon Obelsky, RN, Nursing Spectrum:"Recently I was asked, “What has been your most memorable moment in nursing?” Many humorous moments came to mind. Of course being at all four of my grandchildren’s births was wonderful; however, the following story has really affected my whole life. I do not take for granted some things that I may have, had I not become a nurse and had this experience.
As a long-time maternity nurse, I often hear, “Oh, maternity, that must be such a happy place to work with all those little babies to hold and rock!” For the most part this is true; I have always loved it and would not work in any other field of nursing. Except for other maternity nurses, though, few people know how terribly tragic it can be, to be working when there is a fetal death, or what it’s like to deal with issues of abuse, neglect, or poverty."
